What role has music played in your life?
Music has been with me since I can remember. My Mom told me I was singing from the time I started making noise. Can babies really sing? I guess I'll take her word for it. Because I grew up in a family of musicians, music just seemed "natural", like milk from a cow. I attempted piano at the age of 4 or 5 and it proved to be a slight failure. All I can remember is that my teacher was 1) Old and Smelly 2) Had Crooked Fingers and 3) Was Grouchy!
So I begged my Mom not to make me go. Eventually she gave in. At least I could play "Mary Had A Little Lamb". This was my only real experience with formal music education apart from Guitar Lessons which came later. During my adolescence I found one of my greatest joys to be singing along with the radio and just humming along to the melodies that formed in my head. Oh and also recording myself singing LOUD and PROUD on my 90's duo tape deck behind closed doors! When I turned 15 I got an Acoustic Guitar and thus began learning just how hard it actually was to make songs and of course how rewarding it was at the same time. I officially could never be one of those girls with long pretty fingernails. The calluses had taken over. As I have grown into adulthood, music has been my anchor. I have played in a variety of bands, writing songs about, life, love, loss and many melodramatic events. What I have discovered is that MUSIC is one of the only things that makes my heart come alive and sometimes wants to explode out of my chest. Making music with kids only heightens this sensation.
